Why train with us?

  • Low student to instructor ratios : 3 or 4 students per instructor both in the pool and ocean

  • Our retail store is located downtown.

  • Diving courses available all year-round. Private courses available.

  • We teach children 10 years and older.

  • Passionate team of Instructors and Divemasters who love to teach.

At Diving Sports we believe in making sure all our students receive the highest quality instruction and customer service. We are in the business of training, mentoring, and supporting people to become safe, skillful and confident divers and in doing so, we know we are certifying divers who are able to continue to enjoy the sport incident free for many years.

We also believe in supporting those in the industry who make it as great as it is. We find that the common course structure of shortening class times to lower cost doesn’t benefit our students or our staff. We are changing how we do things to give students the time to excel in all the areas in diving so they can be proud about achieving their certification. This does mean that training will take longer and cost a little bit more than what some other dive companies may be offering. Our instructional staff have decades of experience between them and when you take dive training with us, you will be able to benefit from all that experience. We believe that the way we structure our courses has the most benefit to our students to set them up for continued success in diving.

We begin by scheduling our courses with the number of classes it typically takes most students to master the knowledge and skills, not simply the minimum recommended training hours set by the agencies. Our instructors are open and honest about your progress during each part of the course. Students may need to schedule additional pool or ocean training dives prior to certification. While not very common, occasionally some students require additional support outside of regularly scheduled classes, as many divers take more time on certain skills than others. This ensures our students complete their courses with all the skills and knowledge they need to be safe and enjoy their future dives and courses. When you take a course with Diving Sports, you are welcomed into a passionate and inclusive community of divers eager to support your diving journey well beyond the duration of your class. We do offer private instruction for those needing more one-on-one time with their instructor.

Your adventure begins sooner than you think: register for a PFI Freediver Course. Diving Sports in Vancouver offer Freediving courses and Speafishing charters on Vancouver Island.

Course Description

Freediving is about inward power, discipline and control. If you've always wanted to enter the underwater world quietly, on your own terms, staying as long as your breath allows, then freediving is for you. Taking the PADI Freediver course is your first step toward discovering why freediving is becoming a popular way to explore beneath the waves.

To enroll in a PFI Freediver course you must be at least 16 years old. You need adequate swimming skills and need to be in good physical health. Snorkeling, skin diving or freediving experience is helpful, but is not required.

Prerequisites for the PFI Freediver Training:

  • Minimum age: 16 years old with parent/guardian permission.
  • Ability to swim 200m/655ft continuous swim without fins, snorkel, or floatation aid.
  • Ability to complete a 10 minute tread/float without a swim/floatation aid
  • Medical form filled out and approved by a physician (when applicable). Make sure to carefully look over the Medical HERE
  • Personal Mask, Snorkel, neoprene socks, and gloves are required for the course
  • All eLearning course material must be completed before the beginning of the course
  • All prerequisites must be met before the beginning of the training otherwise students may be required to reschedule. See our Rescheduling Policy HERE

    What is Included:

  • PFI Freediver course material.
  • 2-4 Evening classroom sessions for orientation, skills review, and knowledge development.
  • 4 Evening confined water pool training sessions prior to the ocean dives.
  • 1 full training day in the ocean.
  • Transportation between pool and ocean locations.
  • Certification fees after course completion.
  • All basic rental equipment in our freediver wetsuit packages.
  • We are doing our part to try and reduce plastic use, so all of our certifications will be digital. If students would prefer a physical certification card, then they may pay to have one at the time of certification.

  • What is Not Included:

  • Mask, Snorkel, neoprene gloves, and neoprene socks. Students are required to own each of these items as they cannot be rented for the course.
  • Additional pool or ocean training that may be required. See our Rates for Group and Private Training HERE

  • Your PFI Freediver course will cover fundamental topics such as:

  • Essential safety procedures for breath-holding at the Freediver level
  • Proper breathing techniques for freediving and snorkeling
  • Confined water skill development
  • Open water skill development
  • Equalization for depth diving
  • Equipment for freediving and snorkeling
  • The fundamental physics and physiology of freediving; understand what happens to your body at depth

  • The PFI Freediver Course Consists of Three Main Phases:

  • Knowledge development about beginner freediving techniques and equipment. You'll study independently using the PFI Freediver eLearning.
  • Confined water sessions to learn breathing and relaxation techniques as well as develop static and dynamic apnea. Goal - minimum static apnea of 1:30 minutes with the opportunity to increase to maximum capacity of 2:00min
  • Open water session to practice proper diving technique, buddy procedures and rescue techniques. Goal - constant weight freedive and free immersion to a minimum depth of 12m/40ft.

  • PFI Skills

If a student cannot do this, they may receive a certificate reflecting what they can accomplish. Some students take the course for the experience and not the certification. These students often participate in just the confined-water sessions. We are happy to accommodate students who wish to do so; however, we need to know this ahead of time.

To earn PFI Freediver certification, students must be able to:

  • Demonstrate adequate safe buddy skills, showing how to perform a rescue to PFI standards
  • Perform a minimum 1:30 static breath hold in the pool with the opportunity to increase to maximum capacity
  • Dive using proper technique to at least 10 m/33 ft with constant weight and free immersion using the PFI method of entrance and exit with proper recovery breathing
